About CGR
Where did the name Crazy Goat Racing
originate?
I, Gareth Keith, have been involved in Speedway since 2001 as a co-driver with
friends, Antony Gaunt & Joshua Keene. Joel Stephenson, Team Manager, had also
been involved in Speedway since 2001 but as pit crew member for Super Sedan
driver, Jack Childs #24.
At the start of 2003, Joel and myself started on an interesting journey of
building a racecar for ourselves. Joel purchased a Mazda 929 two-door coupe from
his eldest daughter. It was a little worse for wear though it had potential.
After many long nights and weekends, the two of us had finished the car to a
point where it could be driven
Although it had all the safety
gear installed, it very badly needed a paint job, some new tyres and a little
TLC on the engine. However this didn’t stop us from taking the car out to
Blackwater Speedway track for a practice weekend that friend, Craig Torr had
organised.
So here we were, both trying to drive this Mazda around a WET track on semi-bald
standard tyres and standard flogged out suspension. This made for some fun times
with huge amounts of push, but then the push would turn to huge amounts of tail.
I remember quite clearly trying to drive the wheels off the car and going from
lock to lock from the exit of turn 4 to the entry of turn 1 with one last tank
slap at the apex of the corner that had me facing the wrong way

As we made our way back to the pits to evaluate the huge amounts of work left to
do to the Mazda to get it to turn and drive the way a race car should, there
were quite a range of mixed comments coming from our group of racing friends.
Antony Gaunt said to us “the car looks like it drives a bit like a HAIRY GOAT!!”
Chuckles from the peanut gallery followed. He followed the comment up by saying
“Your both bloody CRAZY for even attempting to drive this thing around the
track”.
We left the car to cool down a bit and walked over to the track to watch some of
the other drivers having a practice.
Joel and I returned to the car only to find Gaunt had given the car a nickname
across the top head plate. In big bold electrical tape letters were the words
‘CRAZY GOAT’
everyone thought it was hilarious and so did we. We
spent the rest of the weekend referring to the car as ‘ THE GOAT ’ not knowing
it would be a name that would stick like mud.
On finishing the car with a well needed paintjob, we decided that the car had
been permanently branded the Crazy Goat so to complete matters we added new
vinyl lettering which replaced Gaunt’s version. I also took the time to airbrush
a goat head on the rear between the taillights just to give the car some extra
character
The ‘GOAT‘ hit the track for the first time in July 2003 at Mac’s Speedway in
Mackay, QLD with Joel behind the wheel. We continued to race the car throughout
the season at many different tracks alternating the driving between each other.
A small fan base began to build especially with the kids and the odd cheer of
“GO THE GOAT” which was heard as we circulated the track. And so this is how
TEAM CRAZY GOAT RACING was born.
